Garage Floor Coverings

Of all the floors in a home, the garage floor is probably the one that most homeowners are least concerned about. However, the garage floor is typically the one that is abused the most, even more than high-traffic areas like the kitchen and stairs. Fluids from cars and workshop projects, snow, and dirt can damage the floor leading to accidents and a bad smell developing in the area.

Whether you use your garage as a workshop or as a place to store the family car, it is a good idea to install a floor covering to promote safety. While you can use mat and rugs, this is generally just a temporary fix. You will save more money over time and achieve better results if you opt for a permanent solution.

Paint or Epoxy  - The cheapest option for covering your garage floor is to paint it. This is a good choice for people working with limited budgets and the paint can add some personality to your garage if you choose the right color. However, the effect is temporary. You will need to repaint at least once per year to maintain the protection paint provides.

A better choice is epoxy. Although more expensive than paint, epoxy lasts a lot longer and produces a showroom quality when used correctly. You will have to take time to prepare your garage floor. Because of this, epoxy works best when used on new floors. Additionally, you will want to avoid getting the floor wet because this can make it more slippery. The chemicals are potent, so be sure to use epoxy in a well ventilated area.

Permanent Garage Floor Coverings - If you are looking for something more upscale than paint or epoxy, then tile is your answer. Tile costs more than epoxy or paint but is also more durable than both. Since the tiles will be laid directly on top of the concrete, your garage floor should be in reasonably good condition. If not, you may need to have it deep cleaned or otherwise prepared for the tiles. There are many ways you can reduce the cost of installing tiles including using interlocking tiles and choosing from the sale bin. Just be certain you use an adhesive made for garages and not for the interior floors of the home.

Alternative Uses for the Garage - Although garages are generally used to store cars, you can use it for a myriad of other things. If you live in an area with mild weather or you have an older car that you are not concerned about protecting from inclement weather, you can convert your garage into a workshop, storage facility, or recreational area.

A good way to start the process is to tile the floor or use a stain on the concrete to improve the look of the garage. If people are going to frequently be using the area, it is a good idea to install insulation and run heating and cooling into the garage to make it comfortable for human use. While single garages can be converted into a useable living space, double garages are excellent candidates for this type of conversion. With the right floor covering, you can use one side of the garage to park the car and the other side as an entertainment or storage area.
